The skill required in stainless welding is no different to mild steel welding but gives a much higher quality finish once it is cleaned, polished or grained. The most frequent type of stainless welding are hand rails, motorcycle exhaust systems and custom parts purely because of its ability to be polished to a mirror finish. The preferred welding process is T.I.G as it creates no spatter and keeps all welding parts ‘clean’ and has creates a smaller and more delicate weld compared to stainless M.I.G welding. M.I.G welding stainless is quicker, causes less distortion but does create quite a lot of spatter and is usually used for more commercial work.
